Termite Inspection for your home or investment

Termites or “White Ants,” as they are often referred to, particularly in Australia, are a group of insects that don’t perform like ants. The insidious nature of termites is that they are a silent invader, these homewreckers can infest a home for years without detection.

Termites gaining access to your property are extremely skilful and can be highly destructive to construction, and decorative timbers. Damage to other materials like plastic, leather, cables, waterpipes is not uncommon for them to reach the timbers they seek to destroy.

Moisture concentrated areas gives termites a red flag and will cause them to participate to have an interest in that particular area, likewise any decomposing organic matter around the yard is a haven for termites. Rotten tree stumps, decaying timbers, stacks of firewood, and waste timbers.

Common termites found Australia

  • Subterranean: build nests and make tunnels in the ground, operate from a central colony which could contain up to 1 million individuals, there mud shelter tubes give them access to a food source keeps the nest sealed for survival.
  • Dampwood: nest in very moist wood and soil and attack deteriorating, dead trees, stumps, poles, fences, waste timbers on the ground.
  • Drywood: nest above ground in relatively dry wood and do not require ground water, other the source they are attacking.

Signs of subterranean termite activity

Signs of a subterranean termite infestation include the shelter tubes originating from the ground, and evidence of tunnelling in the timbers, excavate wood leaving a thin layer of wood intact protecting termites from the environment.

These earth-hardened tubes are made by workers using saliva mixed with soil and bits of wood or even drywall. (sometimes called mud tubes) are the most commonly seen evidence of a subterranean termite infestation.

Mud tubes broken open may relieve live termites passing through the tubes, bubbles and blistering of decorative timbers is another possible indication of an infestation, the damaged timbers is typical thin at the surface and easily pierced with a knife, finding live termites foraging in this area of wood is a good sign of an infestation

Termite noise from the soldiers tapping their heads and mandibles on the wood, which can be heard where there is less atmospheric noise.

Signs of a subterranean termite infestation include swarms of winged reproductive, colonizing flight when humidity levels in the atmosphere are high, just before a storm.

Termite Inspection

Careful inspection is needed to detect any signs of termite activity sustained to the property, regular inspections should not exceed 12 months, a comprehensive inspection including thermal camera imaging, termatrac radar, and moisture readings especially to wet areas.

Thermal Camera Imaging & Termatrac

The T3i Radar-Only is a movement detection device technology penetrates through walls without the effort of drilling in to walls.Infrared thermography is the easiest and quickest method to detect, moisture issues in a building. An infrared camera shows exactly where the problems are and helps focus the inspectors' attention allowing him or her to properly diagnose those weak areas.

Termite Protection

Barrier applications of insecticides may be applied around structural perimeters by professional applicators through trenching, drilling or rodding. Examples include pyrethroids, as well as insecticides such as fipronil, bifenthrin.Termite bait and monitoring stations designed to scientifically eliminate subterranean termite colonies, this treatment exploits termite biology and behaviour. Worker termites take and transfer the bait throughout the nest, eliminating termites at the source.

Maintain your Building to keep termites out

Choose termite-resistant wood or use concrete footers for fences or structures that must contact soil.Remove wood piles, untreated fence posts, and buried scrap wood near structures.Provide ventilation to subfloors and keep them dry.Immediately repair movement cracks, plumbing leaks, and exterior defects in structural wood.
